A railway museum in the former station building: uniforms, ticket offices, rolling stock and maps of lines that no longer exist. A short visit that surprises children and adults alike.
Museum of Railway Tradition in Węgorzewo — a journey back in time at the old station
A small museum with a big story, approx. 6 km from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora. Ticket offices, uniforms, rolling stock and maps of the railway that once criss-crossed the whole of Masuria.
Węgorzewo has no regular rail services today — and yet it has a museum devoted to the railway. And in the most obvious place: the former station building, where people once bought tickets and watched out for the train.
It is a short visit that often surprises. Children look at the uniforms, signs and pieces of rolling stock, while adults think back to the days when people travelled to Masuria by train. And everyone together studies the maps of lines that are now cycle paths — or have vanished altogether.
Why it's worth it
- A museum in a real station. The exhibition is housed in a building that is itself part of the story.
- Railway treasures up close. Pieces of rolling stock, technical equipment, old ticket offices, information boards and railway workers' uniforms.
- Maps that make an impression. They show the railway network of former East Prussia — one of the densest in Europe.
- Short and to the point. About an hour is enough for the visit.
- For a rainy day. The entire exhibition is indoors.
- Close to Ostoja. Approx. 6 km — easy to combine with a walk around Węgorzewo or a bike ride.
Masurian railways — the memory of a century
The permanent exhibition is titled “Masurian Railways — the Memory of a Century”. It tells the history of the railways of former East Prussia and today's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The railway reached Węgorzewo in the second half of the nineteenth century and for several decades was the main way of travelling around the region. The network consisted of standard-gauge lines and a dense web of narrow-gauge railways that carried farm produce from the estates to transhipment stations.
After 1945 most of this infrastructure was dismantled — some of the track was shipped east as reparations, the rest went for scrap. What remained slowly fell into decay until passenger services were suspended.
What you will see in the railway museum in Węgorzewo
The collection includes pieces of rolling stock and the equipment needed to operate it, old ticket offices, direction and information boards, railway workers' uniforms, photographs, timetables, documents and maps. The museum tells its story calmly, without grandiosity — through ordinary objects: a ticket, a uniform, a sign.
For adults who still remember trains in Masuria, the visit can be surprisingly personal. For children it is a chance to see what travel was like before apps and tickets on your phone.
Tracing the railway by bike
After your visit, you will look at the area differently. The cycle path that takes you back to Węgorzewo from the Węgorzewo Loop runs along the old railway bed. You can hire bikes at Ostoja's reception, and the cycling routes start right by the resort — railway history then turns into a living lesson out in the field.
