The ruins of Hitler's headquarters in the Masurian forest and the site of the 20 July 1944 assassination attempt. Approx. 32 km, open all year.
Wolf's Lair — where history stood still in the forest
The Wolf's Lair (Wilczy Szaniec) is the ruin of Hitler's headquarters in the forest at Gierłoż near Kętrzyn, about 32 km from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora near Węgorzewo. Across 250 hectares, the remains of around 200 structures survive, along with the site of Stauffenberg's assassination attempt of 20 July 1944. Open all year round — for adults, teenagers and anyone interested in the history of the Second World War.
In the forest near Kętrzyn, approx. 32 km from Ostoja, lie the ruins of one of the most important headquarters of the Second World War. Hitler spent more than eight hundred days here, and it was here, on 20 July 1944, that Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg planted a bomb during a briefing.
Across the vast forest site, the remains of some two hundred structures have survived — bunkers, barracks and guardhouses. Most striking are the shattered blocks of reinforced concrete, their walls several metres thick, blown up by the Germans in January 1945. Nature is slowly reclaiming the place, which only deepens the impression.
The visit is most rewarding with a guide or an audio guide — only then do the ruins turn into a story of how this “town in the forest” worked and what the day of the assassination attempt looked like.
Why it's worth a visit
- This is where major history happened: Hitler spent more than eight hundred days here, and on 20 July 1944 Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg carried out his assassination attempt.
- The scale is impressive — around 200 structures on 250 hectares of forest, including bunkers whose walls are up to seven metres thick.
- Concrete blocks blasted apart in January 1945, tilted ceilings and the forest slowly reclaiming the site — a sight no photograph can capture.
- You can tailor the visit to yourself: take a guide, or an audio guide available in seven languages, including Polish Sign Language.
- Open all year round, so it is a good destination in autumn and winter too.
- On site there is a visitor centre offering a café, toilets and a parent-and-baby room.
- About 900 m further on lies Mazurolandia, and about 15 km from Ostoja is Mamerki, where the bunkers stand intact.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth taking a guide?
Yes, a guide adds a great deal to the visit. There is also an audio guide in seven languages, including Polish Sign Language.
Is the Wolf's Lair open in winter?
Yes, all year round. From 1 April to 30 September opening hours are longer, in winter shorter — the site's website lists the current times.
Wolf's Lair or Mamerki?
Ideally both: the Wolf's Lair for the ruins and the story of the assassination attempt, Mamerki for complete, undamaged bunkers.
How much time should you plan for the Wolf's Lair?
A relaxed walk along the marked paths takes between one and a half and three hours.
How far is the Wolf's Lair from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora?
About 32 km — Gierłoż lies near Kętrzyn, on the road from Węgorzewo.
Is the Wolf's Lair a good place for children?
For older children and teenagers — yes, it is a living history lesson. With younger ones, it is worth planning Mazurolandia on the same day. The ground is uneven and the bunkers are dark — a torch and closed-toe shoes will come in handy.
What can you combine with the Wolf's Lair in one day?
Mamerki (morning) and the Wolf's Lair (afternoon), or the Wolf's Lair together with Mazurolandia, which is right next door.
Where to stay near the Wolf's Lair?
Ostoja Dwa Jeziora in Kal near Węgorzewo — approx. 32 km from Gierłoż and approx. 15 km from Mamerki, so you can see both headquarters from one base.
