Twin railway viaducts 36 m high — the “aqueducts of the Romincka Forest”. Approx. 82 km, open all year.
Stańczyki Viaducts — Roman grandeur in Masuria
The Stańczyki Viaducts (Wiadukty w Stańczykach) are two twin railway bridges over the Błędzianka valley, on the edge of the Romincka Forest (Puszcza Romincka), about 82 km from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora. Their arches span 30 metres and rise 36 metres above the valley floor, like Roman aqueducts. Accessible all year round — a full-day trip.
On the edge of the Romincka Forest, above the Błędzianka valley, stand two twin railway bridges that look like Roman aqueducts. Arches spanning thirty metres, a height of thirty-six metres above the valley floor — a scale nobody expects in a land of lakes.
The story of their construction is one of wasted effort: work continued, on and off, from 1912 to 1926, one of the bridges never saw a train, and the line was dismantled after 1945. Only the structures remain — and an incredible view.
It is a full-day trip, well worth combining with Gołdap or the Tripoint of borders.
Why it's worth a visit
- Among the highest railway bridges in Poland — 36 metres above the valley floor, a scale more Alpine than Masurian.
- Architecture straight out of Rome: slender arches spanning 30 metres and a stone texture.
- A remarkable story: they took fourteen years to build, and one of the bridges never saw a train.
- One of the most photogenic places in the region — different in every season.
- In winter, the landscape of the Romincka Forest is exceptional.
- A good excuse for a full-day expedition east: Gołdap and the Tripoint where the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Russia meet.
