Gołdap – the town is located within the Szeskie Upland by the Gołdapa River, the right bank of the Węgorapa, 89 km long. It is the main center of the Garbaty Masuria, which is hilly. It has held city rights since 1540. The native Masurian-Lithuanian population was subjected to long-term Germanization; in 1657, during a Tatar invasion, the mayor of this town was impaled on a spear and roasted alive on an open fire in the market square. The town was almost completely destroyed during both World Wars. Between 1941 and 1944, in the Kumiecie forest by Lake Gołdap, the Luftwaffe Headquarters (OKL), known as the Robinson Complex, was located.
Curiosity: In 1765, the outstanding philosopher Kant stayed in Gołdap at the invitation of the commander of the local garrison, General Daniel Friedrich von Lossow. In 1929, the Gołdap high school was named Kantschule. In 1996, a monument to Immanuel Kant was unveiled in the town.
Trójstyk – 32 km east of Gołdap – this is the point where the borders of three countries meet – since the Treaty of Melno in 1422 – the Order, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Polish Crown, and again since 1991 – Poland, Lithuania, and Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast). It is marked by a white concrete obelisk in the form of a pyramid, standing between the Polish and Russian border posts.
Stańczyki – The historic bridges are among the tallest in Poland. The structure has 5 spans, is 180 m long, and up to 36.5 m high. The southern bridge was built first (1912-14, completed in 1917), and later, in 1918, the northern bridge was built. Both structures are parallel to each other.
