Destination: Giżycko
Giżycko Castle – built in 1340 by the Teutonic Knights between lakes Niegocin and Kisajno. At first it was the seat of an Order procurator and consisted of a residential house and a rectangular courtyard surrounded by a wall with a moat beyond it. In 1365 the Lithuanians led by Kęstutis captured and burned the castle; the Teutonic Knights rebuilt the stronghold. After the secularisation of the Teutonic Order the castle became the seat of ducal starosts. After demolition in the 19th century only the residential wing survived. Today the rebuilt castle houses a luxury hotel.
Boyen Fortress – a star-shaped fortress built in the mid-19th century (from 1844) by order of King Frederick William IV.
Swing bridge – on the Łuczański Canal stands a historic swing bridge built in 1889 and turned by hand.
Observation tower – offers a panoramic view of the town and also houses a café.
In season, Giżycko offers numerous concerts – including organ concerts for lovers of classical music – as well as open-air events. The town also has a modern indoor swimming pool with a sauna and jacuzzi, and a port from which excursion boats sail along the Great Masurian Lakes route.
