An unfinished canal to the Baltic: mighty locks in the middle of the forest. Approx. 14 km, open all year, no tickets.
Masurian Canal — a waterway that never carried a boat
The Masurian Canal (Kanał Mazurski) is an unfinished canal from the 1930s that was meant to link Lake Mamry with the Baltic Sea. Five locks survive on the Polish section, including Leśniewo Górne, with a drop of more than 17 metres, and Guja — the only working one. The first sections lie about 14 km from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora. Open area, all year round.
The canal was meant to connect Lake Mamry with the Baltic. Work began in the 1930s, was interrupted by the war — and the canal was never completed. Today its concrete locks stand amid fields and forests like monuments to an unfinished idea.
Five locks survive on the Polish section. The most impressive is Leśniewo Górne, its drop exceeding seventeen metres — hard to believe it was never put into operation. Guja Lock is the only working lock on the whole canal; you view it from behind a fence.
It is an interesting route for families, photographers and anyone who likes places that carry a story — best explored by car or by bike.
