Museum of Folk Culture in Węgorzewo

Masurian arcaded cottages, a smithy and a fire station by the Węgorapa river, and inside, working studios of traditional crafts. A good idea on a cloudy day too.

Museum of Folk Culture in Węgorzewo — a Masurian village where crafts are still at work

A museum in one of the town's oldest buildings and an Ethnographic Park by the Węgorapa river, approx. 4 km from Ostoja Dwa Jeziora. Cottages, a smithy, a fire station and workshops where old trades come to life before your eyes.

Many open-air museums are like a photo album — beautiful, but static. The Ethnographic Park in Węgorzewo is different: the cottages hold not just display cases but working studios. You can see how fabric, a clay pot or a tissue-paper flower is made, and understand what life in a Masurian village was like one and two hundred years ago.

The museum is really close to Ostoja, so it is a great idea for a few hours in Węgorzewo — including when the weather does not tempt you to the beach.

Why it's worth it

  • Close by. Approx. 4 km from Ostoja — just a short drive to Węgorzewo.
  • Living crafts. Weaving, pottery and artistic flower-making studios operate inside the cottages, not in display cases.
  • Genuine buildings from nearby villages. Three arcaded cottages, a smithy and a fire station moved to the riverside park.
  • A historic home. The museum is housed in a building from 1737, one of the oldest in Węgorzewo.
  • Folk art. Collections of sculpture, painting, painted eggs and paper cut-outs.
  • By the water. The Węgorapa flows around the park, and there are moorings next to it — easy to combine the visit with a cruise or a walk.
  • All year round. The museum is open all year, with the full programme from mid-June to mid-September.

A museum in a building from 1737

The museum was founded in 1991 on the basis of the collections of the former District House of Culture and the Regional Chamber in Ogonki, and since 2006 it has been run by the regional government. Its home on ulica Portowa is a historic monument in itself — a building dating from 1737.

Inside are everyday objects, farm equipment, textiles and costumes, ritual accessories and handicrafts of the ethnic groups of north-eastern Poland. Folk art has a place of its own: paintings by Tymoteusz Muśko, sculptures by Stanisław Cierniak, Aleksander Słomiński, Jan Girwidz and Stanisław Rek, as well as collections of painted eggs, paper cut-outs and tissue-paper flowers.

The open-air museum in Węgorzewo — the Ethnographic Park by the Węgorapa

The park was created in 1994. The first buildings to be erected there were the fire station from Ołownik and the smithy from Zabrost Wielki — both of timber-frame construction. Over time they were joined by three Masurian arcaded cottages (two from Krzyżewo and one from Woźnice), a farm building from the early nineteenth century and a brick dwelling house from the second half of the nineteenth century.

A walk among them is a good lesson in regional architecture: arcades, timber structures, and interiors furnished the way the former inhabitants of Masuria lived. With children, it is worth lingering in the smithy and by the old fire station.

Studios of vanishing trades

The most interesting things happen inside the cottages. Weaving, pottery and artistic flower-making studios operate there — crafts shown in action, not behind glass. This is exactly what sets the Węgorzewo park apart from many other open-air museums and means the visit does not bore even those who “don't like museums”.

The Folklore Fair and the Węgorapa waterfront

The Węgorapa river curves around the park grounds. Along it lie the Masurian Shipping (Żegluga Mazurska) quay and yacht moorings, and the museum is also the starting point of the Węgorzewo Loop cycling route. So the visit is easy to combine with a cruise on Lake Mamry in season or a walk by the water.

Once a year, at the turn of July and August, the park becomes the stage of the International Folklore Fair — the largest folklore event in north-eastern Poland. If your stay at Ostoja falls on those dates, it is a good reason to visit Węgorzewo.

  • Clothing: part of the exhibition is outdoors — closed-toe shoes and clothing suited to the weather.

  • With a dog: Ostoja welcomes dogs (a dog's stay is charged extra); check the rules for bringing a dog into the museum and park with the organiser.
